ALONG THE OLD HINDUSTAN - TIBET ROAD


This special itinerary leads you through a remote area of outstanding beauty. Very few tourist visit this area as the Indian government has recently opened this region to foreigners. The road from Shimla loops along the river Sutluj through Kinnaur and on to Lahaul and Spiti connecting up with the Manali-Leh highway. It is a fascinating and scenically beautiful route.

DELHI / SHIMLA / SARAHAN/SANGLA / NARKANDA / NALAGARH / DELHI


» Day 1. DELHI / SHIMLA ( 7 hrs)
:Tibet Holidays

Overnight train to Kalka and transfer to the the Himalayan Queen toy train or drive straight from Delhi. Arrive Shimla by noon. Transfer to palace hotel. Evening explore the infamous Mall with its Churches and mock Elizabethan architecture. Overnight Shimla.

2. SHIMLA / SARAHAN (6 hrs) The road from Shimla goes east towards the Tibetan border along the Sutluj to Rampur Visit Buddhist monastery' and the rajah's palace and temple. Arrive at Saharan and check into the scenically located Srikhand Tourist Bungalow. Evening visit the 2000 year old Bhimakali temple. Overnight Sarahan.

3. SARAHAN / SANGLA (31/2 hrs) : Drive up the Sutlej valley into the Baspa valley to Sangla. Check into Wanderlust deluxe Baspa Banks tented camp.Evening relax around bonfire with a chota peg. Overnight Bospa Banks.

4. SANGLA Morning visit Sangla village, and the old Kamru fort occupied by the local rulers for centuries. Day at leisure by the riverside. Overnight Baspa Banks.

5. SANGLA / CHITKUL /
SANGLA Drive through wooded hillsides to picturesque Chitkul (18 km), the last Indian village before Tibet with its small houses, monasteries and temples. The valley has saffron farms and is famous for apples. Overnight Baspa Banks.

6. SANGLA Day at leisure for nature walks, trout fishing, mountain biking or excursion to Kalpa for views of the Kinner Kailash range. Overnight Baspa Banks.

7. SANGLA / NARKANDA (5 1/2 hrs) : Drive to Narkanda (160km),

a quaint little town with good views. Overnight Tourist bungalow, Narkanda.

8. NARKANDA / NALAGARH (51/2hrS): Drive back via Shimla to Nalagarh. Check into the Heritage Nalagarh Palace Resort, managed by the extremely hospitable royal family.Overnight Nalagarh.

9. NALAGARH / DELHI (6 hrs) :
After leisurely breakfast, head for Delhi or transfer to Chandigarh an hour away, to board shatabdi super fast train to Delhi.Nalagarh
